Blues Heron
The Best of SL Boulevard SLURL
Since I was there for the end of Mankind's concert and I got caught up with some IMs along with Mankind's concert ended a tad bit late, so I figured I'd stay a little more and review Blues Heron who came right after Mankind.
Blues Heron started with a John Butler song. I don't know too much about all these different people cause there are just too many in the world. But I am learning more and more even as I review. I have studied some jazz and musical theatre along with my classical training and took some world music courses too so stylistically I understand a lot of music, but in terms of knowing all the artists, I may not. In fact on a side note one time I was talking to a Korean student at Language Lab and she referenced Airyrang (I'm sure I am miss spelling it) and I knew what she was talking about and know that piece.
Ok, back to Blues. He is a good singer and plays the guitar very well. But he isn't as good as Mankind for sure. Blues is a charter yatch captain in the summer and a music and SL addict in the winter I guess.
He plays both originals and covers in his set. His voice is pretty good, but it's not fully polished especially when he's covering artists. But in general Blues is very strong and professionally prepared.
He does mostly acoustic guitar with him singing, but he does sing to some recorded accompaniment tracks. And when he does that, he definitely sounds even stronger then when he's singing to these tracks. Perhaps it's because he's less exposed giving him just a little more support in sound.
I do think that Blues plays a very mean guitar, and when he does the blues it's definitely very strong. He really gets that very laid back feeling, simple, nothing fancy. Just there, him and his trusty guitar cranking away at the music.
Although he does originals he does a whole lot more covers then he does originals, at least at this concert. Perhaps at a different concert he'd play more originals. But my guess is this is who he usually is since this is one of those last minute concert series for the benefit of Mankind Tracer. I'm thinking this is his normal set.
Blues is hard. There are just too many musicians in the south who just does this on a daily basis. It's really hard to be phenomenal and amazing playing the blues so kudos to Blues Heron for trying. Even though I can't say I'm thoroughly amazed by his performance he is still a very good musician worthy of your time. He will bring to your afternoon or night a pretty relaxing fun time to just enjoy the simplicity of the music of guitar and voice.
